The Davao Central College Elementary Program in its pursuit for quality education and integral human formation continues to provide a warm and supportive atmosphere to its pupils, their parents and teachers. It started with a handful of learners basically coming from the first completers of the Little Sunbeam Pre-school of Toril and other enrollees from the community.
The elementary program aligns its curriculum to the K to 12 curriculum set by the Department of Education. Yearly, the faculty convenes to check and to map the program curriculum. Small class sizes are maintained allowing teachers to focus on the individual needs of their pupils
So that communication, decision-making skills, and critical thinking are developed, the pupils are given opportunities to work with others as the program values collaboration and teamwork. In addition, remedial classes are intensified to help struggling learners cope with the requirements of the grade level. As early as Grade 1, the pupils are exposed to spelling and pronunciation drills aside from their usual reading sessions in English. The formal speech classes kick-off at the fourth level which are held in the Speech Laboratory. With the substantial growth and progress of technology, pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 6 are engaged to basic yet fundamental computer skills.
True to its objectives, the Elementary program which is ACSCU-ACI (Association of Christian Schools, Colleges, and Universities – Accrediting Council Incorporated)-accredited has provided avenues that would equip the pupils with necessary skills through the diverse activities, both co-curricular and extra-curricular. Aside from the pupil government leaders who spearhead most of the school programs, pupils who belong to subject-related organizations extend assistance through peer mentoring sessions. Scouting activities are also being carried out to hone the pupils’ patriotism, self-reliance, kindness, sense of responsibility, and selflessness so they would become responsible citizen and leader in the community. Then it spreads its involvement in off- campus activities as the pupils join contests organized by the Davao Association of Private Schools and Administrators, the Davao City Library, and the Department of Education. Moreover, it bolsters its partnership with its adopted community through conducting outreach activities. Considering the involvement of community resources, the program taps the Bureau of Fire and Protection and Eagles Auxiliary to carry out symposia on risk reduction and management as yearly Fire and Earthquake Drills are strengthened in the campus.
As it envisions a holistic graduate, the Davao Central College Elementary Program illuminates adamance to its stakeholders in bringing out the best from its learners as it fosters learning continuity to mitigate the staggering challenge of the education system with or without any global health crisis.
The Grade School program aims:
At the moment, the education system is disrupted by the adverse effect and disparity of COVID-19 pandemic. But despite this, the Elementary Program continues its mission to promote competence and values formation of the pupils. It came up with its Learning Continuity Plan Up approved by the Department of Education Division of Davao City to ensure that all its learners are given quality learning opportunities in its implementation of the Flexible Learning Approach. Up to this time, in this new normal, it continues to uphold its commitment to mold and to prepare every pupil as it joins the public and private education sectors in utilizing the distance learning and offers three learning modalities: Modified Hybrid, Modified Hybrid Plus, and Home Study. With the collaboration of subjects in the performance tasks and strong partnership with the parents as the learners’ learning coaches, education is never at stake as the teachers endeavor to meet the demands of the academe by joining in-house trainings and external webinars organized by the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) and educational publishing companies. All the school activities go digital as well. The global health crisis may have thwarted a lot of activities and opportunities, but the institution persists to stand by its Vision, Mission, Goals, and Motto – to live in order to love and to light.
